When a group of cheerleaders on their way to a competition get into a car accident, they are forced to venture deep into the isolated backwoods of Florida to find help. Prudes, beware! Despite its tendency to take the comedic low road, The Sweetest Thing is a near-perfect product of the new-millennial Hollywood. That’s a backhanded compliment, but as a fun-loving Yankee girl’s answer to Bridget Jones’s Diary, the mainstream pandering of Nancy Pimental’s lucrative screenplay is undeniably effective. On the opening soundtrack, Macy Gray’s “Sexual Revolution” is a perfect accompaniment to gyrating guy-dumper Christina (Cameron Diaz), whose fear of commitment is tested when she meets Peter (Thomas Jane) and knows he’s Mr. Right. With supportive gal-pals Courtney (Christina Applegate) and Jane (Selma Blair), she plots to snag the guy, and the movie’s road-trip detour mines gut-busting gold from gags involving incriminating dress stains, oral sex, rotting food, garish clothing, and the simple joys of old-fashioned romance. Perfectly cast, raucously ribald, and conventionally charming, The Sweetest Thing is a schizophrenic comedy, but its dual personalities are irresistibly in synch. –Jeff Shannon

Most fans of everything-but-the-kitchen-sink comedies like The Naked Gun and Hot Shots probably think the genre started with Airplane!, but Neil Simon’s The Cheap Detective came two years earlier. It’s a camp parody of Humphrey Bogart’s 1940s detective flicks (particularly The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep), with a big dose of Casablanca thrown in for good measure. There’s no point in describing the plot–it’s little more than a series of cameos by just about every actor working in the 1970s, including Ann-Margaret, Eileen Brennan, Stockard Channing, James Coco, Scatman Crothers, Dom DeLuise, John Houseman, Marsha Mason, and Nicol Williamson. Peter Falk plays the detective and does a fine Bogey impression. Unfortunately, it’s not Neil Simon’s best work–he’s better at character comedy such as The Odd Couple and The Goodbye Girl than this kind of slapstick–but there are a few good lines and the cast gives it their best. Louise Fletcher, not usually known for comedy, does a sharp satire of Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca, and Madeline Kahn never fails to entertain in a variety of disguises. –Bret Fetzer

Miklos Jansco takes the romance out of Russia’s Revolutionary struggle in this simultaneously beautiful and brutal look at the civil war following the Bolshevik coup of 1918. Set in a remote region of Central Russia in 1919, The Red and the White follows the shifting balance of power around an abandoned monastery. The anti-Bolshevik White Army has embarked on a campaign to completely eradicate the area of Red Army soldiers, and scores of Hungarians, former Bolshevik prisoners thrust into battle, are caught in the middle. The graceful camerawork and lush, lovely landscape captured in stunning black-and-white widescreen stand in sharp contrast to the abrupt on-the-spot executions and sadistic cat-and-mouse games of the White Army, hiding behind a mask of politeness and civility as they line up their next row of victims. But Jansco’s portrayal of the Bolsheviks, while decidedly more heroic, isn’t much more sympathetic. The dreamlike poetry of Jansco’s cinema and the surreal atmosphere of doom carries the film in place of a strong story or a central set of characters, but there is no mistaking his sympathies for the victims of the struggle–peasants and prisoners and civilians caught between collision of two armies, systematically stripped of their dignity and their lives as the battle rages around them like an evocation of hell on Earth. It’s a brave stance for a Hungarian filmmaker working on Soviet soil in 1968 and it makes for a powerful film. –Sean Axmaker

Director Joe Johnston has always had an entertaining sense of adventure, and with Hidalgo he proves it in spades. It’s yet another underrated film for Johnston (along with such enjoyable popcorn flicks as The Rocketeer and Jurassic Park III), dismissed by many critics but a welcome treat for anyone drawn to good ol’-fashioned movie excitement. In his first role since playing Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Viggo Mortensen brings handsome appeal to his low-key portrayal of Frank T. Hopkins, a real-life long-distance horse racer who, as the movie opens, has witnessed the appalling massacre of Native Americans at Wounded Knee in 1890. Drifting into Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, he agrees to compete, with his trusty mustang, Hidalgo, in “The Ocean of Fire,” a treacherous 3,000-mile horse race across the Arabian desert. Toss in a bunch of conspiring competitors, a noble sheik (Omar Sharif), his lovely daughter (Zuleikha Robinson), and enough fast-paced danger to fill 133 minutes, and you’ve got a rousing, humorous, and lightly spiritual adventure that’s a lot of fun to watch. It hardly matters that it’s almost pure fiction (the real Hopkins was known by many as “a pathological liar”). More important is the love of movies and moviemaking that Johnston so delightfully conveys. –Jeff Shannon

A slight but appealing dramatic comedy, My Wife Is an Actress explores the marital downside of fame. It’s about the hazards of being married to someone–in this case the fine French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, playing a fictionalized version of herself, also named Charlotte–whose profession and celebrity pose a constant threat to matrimonial harmony. The movie dispels the fantasy of a movie-star spouse (i.e., would you really want to marry Julia Roberts?), exploring the reality with adequate humor but precious little insight. Gainsbourg’s actual husband, Yvan Attal, is also her director and costar, playing Charlotte’s sports-reporter husband (named Yvan), and turning jealous when she gets friendly with her current film’s costar, played with world-weary charm by Terence Stamp. Surely this scenario was fascinating for French filmgoers, and as lightweight drama it’s a pleasant enough diversion. Unfortunately, Attal discreetly avoids the deeper details of his life. Instead we get the shallow version, still authentic but not authentic enough. –Jeff Shannon
